Make It Happen Monday: Hiring a Contractor? Questions Every Homeowner Should Ask First

One thing many homeowners don’t realize is that hiring a contractor can look very different from one company to another.
Some general contractors are heavily involved in the day-to-day management of a project — coordinating trades, checking progress regularly, and helping ensure the work is being completed properly.
Others may schedule the work but expect the homeowner to manage much of the communication and oversight themselves. Which can be very frustrating if this wasn't expected.
That’s why it’s important to set expectations before a project begins: Yours and Theirs.
Questions to ask potential contractors:
• Who will supervise the work?
• How often will someone be onsite?
• Who coordinates the trades?
• Who do I contact if questions come up?
• Who helps ensure the design is being followed?
• Who cleans up after the project is done? (I suggest working in cleaning service visit when the project is complete - Particularly for large or vintage home remodels)
A good remodeling experience isn’t just about beautiful finishes.
It’s about communication, coordination, and having the right people guiding the process from start to finish. It's about good design and FUNCTION that fits your life not the contractors or the designers.
Part of my role is helping clients navigate those moving pieces, so the project feels much less overwhelming. Whether I'm helping with cabinetry, space planning, or overall kitchen design, I often find that the most successful projects begin with a clear plan and realistic expectations.
If you're planning a kitchen or bath remodel and aren't sure where to begin, a design consultation can help bring clarity to the process. Together, we can explore options, discuss potential challenges, and create a plan that fits your home, budget, and goals.
